The Hero's Journey
Project DP Update
In this project, we focused on a lot of different mini-projects put into one. First, we started off with a pretty long, in-depth explanation of the Hero’s Journey and who created it. The Hero’s Journey was created by Joseph Campbell. He figured out that almost every story had a specific cycle and he decided that he should name it the “Hero's Journey”. This consists of twelve steps but we focused on eight. Call to Adventure, Crossing the Threshold, Trials and Temptations, The Abyss, The Transformation, Apotheosis, Crossing the Return Threshold, and Rejoining the Community. After we went into depth of what those were we read The Alchemist and Siddhartha to see this cycle in real life scenarios. We read the books really fast but then we had a discussion about the meaning in each of the books. The books focused on the cycle but it also included deeper topics to explain the real underlying messages that they wanted to convey throughout the stories. That part of the project was very long, but it was also very interesting. This part of the project transferred us to the next portion of the project really nicely. We started to put what we learned through the Hero’s Journey into our own stories. We created stories that were meaningful in our lives as well as found creative ways to showcase the process of the last mini project. This Project really showed me how many underlying things went into our everyday lives. You can find the Hero’s Journey in just about anything you do.
I grew in this project because this project showed me new ways to look at my life. I think about this project in everything that I do now because now I know that it is in every book I read and will reed and every movie that I have seen. The thing that I have grown the most with is my storytelling skills. I have learned that I can be really confident in my storytelling and story writing. Before I would always doubt myself on my writing because I always thought it was awful. It was really nice to see people crying about my story and to hear people say that they want to hear me perform it. It’s a really big boost of confidence. I also got a lot more confident in my storytelling. At first, I could tell my story without crying from being so anxious or never standing still because I was so in my head about it not being good enough. In the end, I was confident in my story and I started using my anxiety for hand gestures to make my story better. This project has made me so confident in everything that I will do in the future. It has shown me a new look on my everyday life. Without this project, I would not have realized how much I love writing and telling my stories.
Some things I will take away from this project is how to be excited about my peers. I got to experience people sad stories and funny stories and scary stories. These stories made me so much more aware of people's lives and where they want to go in the future from their stories of the past. It made me really interested in their lives and how they have grown as people. I have become a better person because of this project. I would have never mentioned that my peers changed my perspective on life but I did because this project has shown me that everyone's story is different and everyone is going to have a different Journey which is really exciting. One of my peers was telling a story about giving a family in need money and it made me realize what I can do in my life to make a difference. This project may have only focused on the Hero’s Journey and our stories but it made me realize how I can grow as a person. I can start believing in myself if it's school related or making something in my life better or making someone else's life better.
